~ Beware! ~ Friday Flyers + WPC – Careful ~

If it’s from nature and in the air, or can get there on its own, it’s a Friday Flyer! In honor of Samhuinn (Samhain)* here are some spooky spiders.

In response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge: “Careful.”

*Samhuinn Scottish, Samhain (pronounced /ˈsɑːwɪn/ SAH-win or /ˈs.ɪn/ SOW-in[1] is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the “darker half” of the year. Wikipedia

  1. Fascinating, Cindy! I have not heard of this festival before. My mind has been changing about spiders… they are amazing creatures once one gets past the initial shriek! There is an active web outside my kitchen window that serves as the perfect observation opportunity. Spiders are very careful when tending the web. A day or so ago, an autumn leaf happened to get trapped on the edge of the web. The spider was out in a jiffy to free the leaf from the web. It carefully bit the strands that held the leaf, allowing the leaf to fall away. Then the spider repaired the hole in the web and went back up to the window frame to await prey. This morning the spider was busy carefully wrapping an entrapped insect captured in the web. A spider is a perfect creature to represent “careful!”

  2. Lindy Le Coq says:

The festival was co-opted by Christianity into All Hallows’ Eve (and All Hallows’ Day) which has been co-opted into Halloween!
I am always careful around spiders since their bites are often painful and sometimes life threatening. Still, they fascinate me, and are an essential part of a healthy ecology. Recently, I learned that rosemary is an effective deterrent to spiders, so if you don’t want them to crawl inside, or hang outside windows, just rub fresh rosemary around the edges of the window. Like you, though, I enjoy watching them at work!

  3. Nice shots! 🙂
I am not at all aversive to spiders. Most all of them are harmless and the ones that are are very rare (and not likely to bite anyway). Spiders are not nearly as dangerous as many of our politicians are! 🙂
